UNDERSTANDING DIAMOND QUALITY

Understanding the qualities that define a diamond is the first step in choosing a stone that feels right for you. Each diamond carries its own character, shaped by elements that influence its appearance and brilliance. Gaining a sense of these fundamentals brings clarity and confidence to your selection journey.

what is a lab grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond that is created in a controlled laboratory environment.

This is achieved by replicating the natural process that forms diamonds deep in the earth. Lab-grown diamonds are composed of pure carbon, and share identical chemical, physical, and optical properties to mined diamonds.

diamond shape

Diamond shape is often the first design decision because it sets the overall personality of your ring. Shape refers to the outline or silhouette of the stone when viewed from above.

There is a wide variety of shapes to explore. Classic choices include round brilliant, cushion, princess and oval, while more distinctive shapes like emerald, radiant, pear and marquise offer their own character and light performance. Each shape interacts with light differently, creating its own balance of sparkle, elegance and presence.

Choosing the right shape comes down to personal style, desired proportions on the hand and the overall aesthetic you envision for your piece.

THE 4 C'S

When evaluating diamonds, the “4 C's" serve as the universal standard guiding buyers on quality and value. Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), these criteria—cut, clarity, carat, and colour, determine a diamond’s beauty and uniqueness, helping understand what makes each stone special.

CUT

Cut is the most influential factor in a diamond's beauty. It determines how effectively a stone returns light to the eye, which is what creates brilliance, fire and sparkle. Cut refers to the precision of a diamond's facets, the symmetry of their alignment and the proportions that govern how light travels through the stone.

A well cut diamond will appear lively and bright, while a poorly cut diamond can look dull even if its colour or clarity grades are high. Round brilliant diamonds receive a formal cut grade from laboratories, and we select only those with excellent ratings for superior performance.

Fancy shapes do not receive a standardised cut grade, so we evaluate each stone based on the quality of its polish and symmetry, as well as the visual balance of its proportions. Only stones that meet our internal standards for light performance and craftsmanship are chosen.

CLARITY

Clarity describes the natural internal features and surface characteristics that form during the diamond creation process. These tiny inclusions are a unique fingerprint of each stone and are often invisible without magnification.

Laboratory grading assesses clarity on a scale ranging from Flawless to Included, based on the size, number and position of these features. In practice, most inclusions do not affect a diamond's durability or beauty, especially when they are small or located away from the table.

We choose diamonds in the VS2 - VVS1+ range because they are consistently clean to the eye and maintain exceptional visual purity while offering outstanding value for quality

CARAT

Carat is a measurement of a diamond's weight rather than its size. One carat equals 200 milligrams and can be divided into 100 points for precise comparison.

Although carat weight influences presence on the hand, it is not the sole indicator of beauty or value. Two diamonds with identical carat weights can appear different in size depending on their proportions, and their price can vary significantly based on cut, colour and clarity.

When selecting a diamond, it is important to consider carat weight alongside the other Cs to achieve the ideal balance between size, performance and overall visual impact.

COLOUR

Colour refers to a diamond’s natural colour. It is graded from D (highest colour grading) to Z (light yellow colour). Colourless diamonds (D - F) reflect more light and are more desirable.

We choose to work only with D - F coloured diamonds to match our commitment to exceptional quality.
